Course Goals: An introduction to mushroom taxonomy and identification. This three-day course is offered yearly immediately after the end of the fall quarter. Register for the class in the winter quarter.

   
Entry Level: A general background in biology or microbiology (Biological Sciences 10 or Microbiology 20 or an equivalent course) is highly recommended; some knowledge of mycology, such as Plant Pathology 148 or SAS 120, is desirable; or consent of instructor.

Course Format: Field-oriented instruction. Students will collect and identify fleshy fungi. Mushrooms will be identified based on macro- and microscopic features.  Instructions on using taxonomic keys will be provided.  Each day, the class will travel to the field in the morning and return to the lab in the afternoon with specimens.  Transportation and lodging (Bodega Marine Laboratory) will be provided.  Grades (pass/fail) will be determined by class participation.
