Guiding Committee
Each student will have a three member guiding committee, to be appointed by the Graduate Affairs Committee before the end of the first quarter of your first year.

Your major professor and graduate adviser will both be members of the guiding committee along with one other faculty member deemed appropriate based on your area of research; the third committee member can be from outside the program. A fourth member can be added if there is a good reason to do so. Both M.S. and Ph.D. students will have guiding committees.

The purpose of the guiding committee is to advise you on your research and help you develop a realistic proposal for your thesis project. You are encouraged to meet with members of your guiding committee as often as needed. The entire committee should meet at least twice during your first year (first and third quarters) and, if you are a Ph.D. student, at least one additional time prior to your qualifying examination.
