Research Adviser
Rsch_Adv.jpg (15642 bytes)The Research Adviser is the professor with whom students carry out their research. The Research Adviser (also referred to as the major professor) may not also be a student's Academic Adviser. The major professor will help a student identify a research topic and design and carry out the experimental work to answer the questions associated with this topic. This individual will ultimately serve as chairperson of the thesis (masters or Ph.D.) committee. Often students have identified their major professor before arriving at Davis. Other students elect to do a rotation and work in several labs before deciding on a research project and a major professor. The Departments of Plant Pathology and Nematology are separate academic units that share a common administrative office. Plant pathology students who have a strong interest in Nematology, can select the Nematology specialty area. These students usually have a Nematology faculty member as their major professor, but receive their degree in "Plant Pathology". Upon consultation with their graduate adviser, students may choose to substitute a nematology course for one of the three core courses required for plant pathology students.
