Professor Johan Leveau and Graduate student Hung Doan were recently instructors within the UC Davis COSMOS program for high school students (https://cosmos.ucdavis.edu/events/about-cosmos ). COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential program for students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Johan and Hung developed a curriculum that introduced students to the microbes that live on and in plants. Students learned basic concepts of microbiology, plant disease, food security and food safety. As a project, students isolated, described, and wrote a report on a microbe of their choice. The course ended with a poster session where students got to discuss their results.
