Area of Specialization

Integrated management of Armillaria root disease.  Significance of riparian areas in the epidemiology of Pierce's disease in northern California.  Roles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in grapevine nutrition.

Research Statement

I am a grapevine pathologist with the USDA, located on the UC Davis campus. I run a research program in sustainable viticulture, which was established in 2000 by Congressional mandate. The purpose of the program is to develop long-term, disease control strategies for winegrapes. Basic research on disease epidemiology is at the core of this mission. Research interests include: epidemiology of Pierce’s disease in north-coastal California, biological and cultural control of Armillaria root disease of grapevine, enhancing indigenous populations of beneficial soil microbes in vineyard soils, and functional roles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the grapevine rhizosphere.
