Tribute to Deborah Golino by Maher Al Rwahnih

Deborah Golino, FPS Director, to Retire in July 2021

After 27 years of service, Foundation Plant Services’ (FPS) Director and Cooperative Extension Specialist, Dr. Deborah Golino will retire on July 1, 2021. Since 1994, Dr. Golino has been the Director of FPS, a self-supporting service unit in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at University of California, Davis. FPS is dedicated to the distribution of disease-tested, true-to-identity plant materials with programs for grapes, strawberries, fruit trees, nut trees, sweet potatoes, and roses.

We thank you, Jovita, for your many years of dedicated service to our department.  You joined us in 2002 during a challenging time, and came in and transformed our laboratory services into a modern and efficient facility.  All of us in the research labs rely upon and greatly appreciate your outstanding service. Congratulations to Neptali Flores in Lab Leveau for being a 2020 NSURP Award winner! Neptali is a second-year Biology student at San Jose State University and started interning in the lab this summer (remotely) as part of the National Summer Undergraduate Research Project (https://nsurp.org). Graduate student Sara Garcia Figuera wins APS Pacific Division student oral presentation competition

Sara Garcia Figuera, a PhD candidate in Neil McRoberts’ group, received the 1st place in the APS Pacific Division student oral presentation competition for her presentation entitled “The dilemma of coordination for huanglongbing management in California”. This year, the Division met virtually in conjunction with the American Phytopathological Society conference (Plant Health 2020 online), and presentations by students who were part of the Division were entered into the competition and judged by a panel.

New fungus named in honor of Prof. Tom Gordon

A new fungal species, Leptographium gordonii, was recently named in honor of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Tom Gordon. This species is a member of the Ophiostomatoid fungi found in association with the red turpentine beetle, a bark beetle pest of pine trees. The study is from the lab of M.J. Wingfield, a long-time collaborator of Prof. Gordon, who described the etymology of the name as follows: "Named for Prof.

Professor Gitta Coaker recognized for Graduate Advising and Mentoring

Congratulations to Gitta Coaker for receiving a Graduate Program Advising and Mentoring Award from the Office of Graduate Studies.  Gitta has served as an academic advisor and member of the Plant Pathology Graduate Affairs Committee for 11 years, and chaired the committee for five years, all the while leading a large research group.  The award acknowledges her excellent service to our graduate program, as well as her positive impact on graduate students and colleagues.
